Our work helps our clients to understand and manage their risk. The risks we focus on are issues that may lead to:
Fires
Flooding and sinking
Potential harm to the crew
Structural problems from corrosion, fatigue, and rot
Compliance with laws and regulations
The issues that lead to the above problems have been studied extensively. The marine industry and government regulators have developed laws, regulations, and voluntary standards designed to prevent these issues and are continually updated based on findings from incident investigations.
Survey reports from FINNASK Marine inspect the boat and report on observed risk and how the boat conforms to the laws, regulations, and industry standards. The report will provide information on how to further reduce the risk, but risk is never completely eliminated, it is managed.
The report will:
Describe the vessel, including an inventory of major systems
Compare the boat and its systems to standards developed by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) or, on request, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards
Report on issues observed
Recommend corrections for issues
Determine the fair market value as-is and with issues corrected
Risk tolerance is a personal decision, we tailor our work to your needs and explain the limitations on what we can investigate at each price point.
For pricing, budget $30/foot for condition and valuation surveys:
Simple boats with limited systems may be reduced to $25/foot
Multi hulls and complex boats, $33 to $35/foot (multi hulls are larger than monohulls of the same length)
Boats over 55 feet in length overall, $33/foot
Most US-based banks and insurance companies require a survey report from a member of SAMS or NAMS. We are a member of SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors), as well as IIMS (International Institute of Marine Surveying) which is widely recognized worldwide but less known in the US.
